What is Dry Eye?
Tears hydrate, protect, and prevent infection of the eye. The human eye is lubricated by tears which are a combination of water, oil, and mucous produced by glands in the upper and lower eyelids. A lack of any of these components results in a condition known as DRY EYE DISEASE (DED).
What effects mucin, water, or mucous production that eventually lead to dry eye and unstable tear film? There are many possible contributing factors that range from underlying disease like diabetes, RA, or Sjogrens. It may be triggered by your environment, allergies, or due to medications.
It could also be a combination of things from age related, hormone related changes to a recent eye surgery or that fact that your contact lenses cause discomfort. Your eye care professional can look at your individualized situation and see what works best for your dry eye symptoms.
